The scheme replaces a terrace of mid C19
flats within the Clifton Road/Sussex Place Conservation Area.
Originally designed for a private client, the brief was to
maximise the lettable units within the site and planning
constraints. A key feature in meeting UDP amenity standards was
the use of roof terraces. The scheme was subsequently purchased
post planning by Ealing Family Housing Association, and the
internal layouts radically redesigned to better match their
role as providers for social housing.
Conceived as two villas with a linking
element, the scheme synthesises the best features of the
Conservation Area into the new design without resorting to
mimicry. Blue barrel to front emphasises that this is a new
building despite traditional forms and detailing. Nevertheless,
flemish bond brickwork, stone cills, double hung sliding sash
windows and leaded dormer windows give the building a
“ring of truth”. Overall massing and layout pay
close regard to adjoining buildings.
