The brief is resolved by combining the
different levels between front and rear with the insertion of
two partitions to create three distinct areas within the
overall spatial envelope: entrance, living and mezzanine. New
externally hung sliding doors give direct access to the garden
from the living area, and reflect the building's utilitarian
origins. The oblique setting of the new partitions controls the
distribution of space, being generous where needed and
squeezing it elsewhere to restrict views, thereby contrasting
the different spatial characteristics of each area and inviting
further exploration. Day lighting has also been much improved
by the addition of 2 roof lights and the opening up of a
previous window to the mezzanine.
Attention to detail is vital to the
execution of the built work, including a stair which doubles up
as drawers, and the shadow gap detail which is continued to the
tri-partite folding doors which access the bike store.
